Uphill they performed brilliantly on most surfaces, gripping well up my favourite steep climbs, be they rutted or just plain broken tarmac. Only on the slippery tarmac caused by farm vehicle slime did they require an adjustment of my position to stop them spinning, but I suspect nothing else would have made much difference short of a full-on mountain bike tyre. I figured I'd use this fast-acting sealant, which is capable of plugging bigger holes than the standard option, as I was expecting rough conditions over the winter, but I needn't have worried – or if they have punctured I've not noticed it. So it's a win-win. The sidewalls of the Panaracers aren't porous, and I didn't have any issues with sealant leaking out when first inflating to the recommended 60psi maximum pressure. Front doesn’t show much wear, but the rear has lost all the bumps in the center. I’m guessing it probably has quite a few more miles left in it, but I haven’t found any reference for wear markers. I typically have 38-40 psi in it. I have punctured it once since I installed it, but it was one of those stealth punctures that sealed without my knowledge. Only discovered it when I was pumping up the tire and noticed an abnormally low starting pressure. I found fitting these a bit of a nightmare, though that could just be my Hunt rims. Getting that last bit of tyre over the rim was nigh on impossible with conventional means. Tyre levers were useless (I actually broke one before giving up), and in the end it took soapy water on everything and a pair of grippy rubber gloves to roll the tyre over the edge. Not fun. NOTE: As of 2021, we've improved the puncture resistance tests and now provide 'Total Puncture Score' as the main puncture resistance indicator. This compound has the same low rolling resistance as the Ultima compound. Its enhanced wear resistance makes it perfect for a long-lasting training tyre with an excellent ride.

Under NAFTA, items that are deemed manufactured in the US (and Mexico) are duty free. A duty (percentage) may be charged if the item is manufactured in another country. I tried Panaracer FlatAway kevlar liners in the RH Snoqualmie Pass. So far so good but not enough miles to be sure. These liners are light and don't noticeably affect rolling resistance but they protect only the tread. Going forward I plan to use these in most of my tires since I get cuts only in the tread.

AX technology uses extremely narrow cord which is weaved at a super high density into the casing for lightness and flexibility. This increased density improves resistance to cuts and abrasions. For more about our grip test, and how the knobby tread pattern affects the test results, we have more information here. It's critical to understand our static wet grip test works with a hard surface. This means the grip data is only directly useful for comparing tires on hard surfaces where the rubber compound creates the grip. Understanding the test results gets more difficult when grip is created by the knobs digging into the surface.
